January 15, 2007 - The current issue of the American Journal of Cardiology (vol 99, no.2) contains an article by Dr. Barrett-Connor of UCSD Department of Family and Preventive Medicine using data provided by the LifeScore Clinic.
Dr. Barrett-Connor performed CT coronary scans on a cohort of her Rancho Bernardo Study and compared the results with carotid ultrasound measurements of intimal media thickness, another measure of atherosclerosis.
She found a positive correlation between the two studies. She also found that CT coronary calcium was a powerful predictor of future mortality. 10 of the 13 subjects who died over the time course of the study had coronary calcium scores greater than 400, indicating advanced coronary atherosclerosis.
