February 2, 2007 - An article from the Lifescore Clinic and UCSD on the relationship between osteoporosis and arterial calcium has been accepted for publication in the journal Calcified Tissue International.
The study shows a significant correlation between the presence of osteoporosis and the presence of arterial calcium. Possible mechanisms for this association are discussed.

January 29, 2007 - The January 23, 2007 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (vol.49, no.3) contains an expert consensus report on coronary artery calcium scoring.
The report recommends calcium scoring for those at intermediate risk for heart disease, to better identify level of risk. They also recommend the study in patients at low risk with atypical chest pain symptoms.

January 15, 2007 - The current issue of the American Journal of Cardiology (vol 99, no.2) contains an article by Dr. Barrett-Connor of UCSD Department of Family and Preventive Medicine using data provided by the LifeScore Clinic.
Dr. Barrett-Connor performed CT coronary scans on a cohort of her Rancho Bernardo Study and compared the results with carotid ultrasound measurements of intimal media thickness, another measure of atherosclerosis. She found a positive correlation between the two studies. She also found that CT coronary calcium was a powerful predictor of future mortality. 10 of the 13 subjects who died over the time course of the study had coronary calcium scores greater than 400, indicating advanced coronary atherosclerosis.
