HeartScore

HeartScore is the LifeScore Clinic’s test for coronary artery calcium (CAC). CAC is a highly accurate marker for atherosclerosis, or plaque, in the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries bring blood to your heart. The more plaque you have, the higher your risk for a heart attack.

The three pictures above show normal arteries on the left, small plaque build-up in the middle, and severe plaque build-up on the right. HeartScore accurately and noninvasively measures the amount of plaque in your coronary arteries. Scores fall into the following groups:

0 A perfect score! Lowest risk group for future heart attacks
1-10 Minimal plaque. Very low risk
11-100 Mild plaque. Low to moderate risk
101-400 Moderate plaque. Moderate to high risk
Over 400 High plaque burden. Highest risk group

We also compare your score to others in your age group:

Lowest 25% of scores: Low risk group
25th to 50th percentile: Low to moderate risk group
50th to 75th percentile: Moderate to high risk group
Over 75th percentile: Highest risk group

Based on your risk group, Dr. Wright will make recommendations. Higher risk patients will be advised to do some or all of the following:

  • Take niacin to raise HDL cholesterol
